Tire Guide

What Calgary drivers should know before buying tires online — sizes, seasons, specs, and booking install.

Find your tires

Start your search

Use our tire finder to search by sidewall size, vehicle or VIN, or brand — then refine on the results page.

By tire size

Enter width, aspect ratio, and rim size, or paste a full size like 225/60R17. You will land on tire results filtered to that fitment.

Open tire finder →

By vehicle or VIN

Your VIN or year, make, model, and trim helps us show factory tire sizes for your vehicle. Results depend on what we have in stock and published online for your sizes — not every trim will show matches.

Reading your tire size

  • On the sidewall

Numbers like 225/60R17 102H — width, aspect ratio, rim diameter, then load index and speed rating.

  • Driver door jamb

Factory size sticker on the pillar when you open the driver door.

  • VIN

17 characters on registration, insurance, or the base of the windshield (driver side).

Pick the right season

Winter tires

Softer rubber compounds and tread patterns designed for cold temperatures, snow, and ice. For Calgary winters, dedicated winter tires are strongly recommended for safety — Alberta does not require them by law, but they perform better than all-season tires below about 7 °C.

All-season tires

A compromise for year-round driving in milder conditions. They trade some cold-weather grip and snow performance for convenience if you drive mostly on cleared roads.

Summer tires

Optimized for warm, dry, and wet pavement. Not intended for winter use. Best when you run a dedicated winter set for the cold months.

Understand the specs on our site

After you search, use filters on tire results and product pages to compare options. Definitions below match what you will see at Spec R.

Load index
A number code for how much weight each tire can support at maximum pressure. When replacing tires, choose a load index that meets or exceeds your vehicle’s factory specification.
Speed rating
A letter (for example H or V) for the maximum speed the tire is rated for. Match or exceed the rating on your door jamb sticker or owner’s manual.
UTQG (treadwear, traction, temperature)
Uniform Tire Quality Grading appears on many passenger tires: treadwear (higher often means longer tread life), traction (wet grip grades A–C), and temperature (heat resistance A–C). UTQG is useful for comparison but is not a safety certification on its own. Filter by treadwear warranty, UTQG traction, or UTQG temperature under More filters on results.
Run-flat
Tires designed to support limited driving after a loss of pressure. Only use if your vehicle is equipped for run-flats. Filter: Run-flat.
Studdable
Winter tires that can accept metal studs where legally permitted. Filter: Studdable.
EV-optimized
Tires marketed for electric vehicles — often lower rolling resistance or higher load capacity. Filter: EV-optimized.
OEM / Original equipment
Tires that match factory fitments for some vehicles. Filter: OEM / Original equipment.

Rebates

Some tires qualify for manufacturer mail-in rebates. When a campaign is active, you will see a rebate badge on results and product pages. Rebates are optional offers — not every tire has one. Sort results by rebate first to surface eligible products.

Calgary winter & studded tires

Calgary winters drop well below freezing — often near −30 °C — with Chinook warm-ups in between. Dedicated winter tires stay flexible in the cold; switch near 7 °C when sustained cold arrives.

Alberta allows studded passenger tires October 1 through April 30 on most roadways, including Calgary, unless posted otherwise. Studless winters suit many city drivers; studded options help on hard-packed ice.

Staggered fitments

BMW M models, Porsche, and many performance sedans use different front and rear tire sizes. Search by vehicle in our tire finder to see staggered OEM sizes on results — shop front and rear together when both are in Alberta inventory.

Frequently asked questions

Should I search by tire size or by VIN?

Use size when you already know the numbers on your sidewall or door jamb sticker. Use vehicle or VIN when you want factory sizes for your trim without looking them up. Either path leads to tire results where you can filter further.

Do I need winter tires in Calgary?

Winter tires are not legally required in Alberta, but they provide much better grip in cold, snow, and ice than all-season or summer tires. Many Calgary drivers run a dedicated winter set from late fall through spring.

Why do I see no results for my vehicle?

Vehicle search shows tires that match your OEM sizes and are published to our online store. If nothing appears, try searching by size directly, contact us, or check back after new inventory is synced.

How does compare work?

Add up to four tires from results or product pages, then open Compare tires to see specs and pricing side by side.

How do rebates work?

Rebates are manufacturer mail-in offers on select tires during active campaigns. Follow the rebate link or instructions on the product page. Eligibility and amounts are set by the manufacturer, not Spec R.

Can I buy tires online and book installation separately?

Yes. Add tires to your cart and checkout online, then use Book installation to schedule mount and balance at our Calgary location.

What is the Alberta tire recycling fee?

It is a mandatory provincial environmental fee on tire sales in Alberta, collected by retailers and remitted to fund tire collection and recycling programs (Alberta’s tire stewardship system). It is not part of the tire’s listed price — at Spec R it is added at checkout, usually $5.0 per passenger or light-truck tire (amounts can differ for other tire categories per the official schedule).

In your cart it appears as a separate line (often labeled as a government environmental fee) in addition to the tires you are buying. See the Alberta Recycling tire fee schedule for full details.
